Christine Spengler

Christine Spengler, French photographer and writer raised in Madrid, discovered her vocation at the age of 25 while travelling through Chad with her brother Eric, a fashion photographer. One day, they happened upon barefoot Toubou rebels firing their Kalashnikov rifles at French helicopters and she felt the impulse of capturing the scene. So, she picked up her brother’s Nikon camera and took her first pictures. It was at that moment that she decided to become a war correspondent, to testify in favour of just causes and of the oppressed. This was the beginning of a long journey that has taken her to the world’s hot spots: Northern Ireland, Vietnam, Cambodia, Lebanon, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Western Sahara, Iran, Kosovo and Afghanistan, where being a woman granted her easier access to the female world. She worked for the photo agencies Sipa-Press and Corbis-Sygma and her work has appeared in news publications worldwide and has been exhibited in numerous museums. She was awarded the Legion of Honour by the French government. As a writer she has published her autobiography "Entre la luz y la sombra" (Between Shadow and Light) and is now preparing a second part, while finishing other literary projects. She is currently negotiating the film adaptation of her life and work.
